Seung Lee
Three years ago, Mina Lee knew she needed help caring for her son, Seung.
Blind, hearing impaired and developmentally delayed, Seung was growing older but not more independent. At seven years old, he was still being pushed around in a stroller and drinking out of a bottle. He had no means of communication beyond crying and didn't have a regular sleep pattern. Most concerning, his behavior was growing increasingly aggressive—to the point where he was even beginning to hurt himself.
With the help of Seung's teachers at school, Mina searched for over a year to locate a program that could help her better meet her son's needs. When she learned about the Children's Residential Program at Junior Blind and its expertise in working with children with multiple disabilities, Mina felt she had finally found the help she was looking for.
Mina is amazed at how much progress Seung has been able to make in the last few years thanks to the program's structure, intensive training and highly-skilled staff. For example, her son is walking on his own and learning how to use a white cane. He is drinking out of a cup and is able to use utensils. He is also beginning to use sign language and is sleeping through the night. Even more, Seung is calmer and finding joy in many new activities, especially music.
Says Mina, "At first, I felt a lot of guilt for enrolling Seung in a program away from home. But, now, I know in my heart that I made the right decision. Because of Junior Blind, I finally have hope that my son will lead a more independent life. I finally have hope that my son will be happy."
