STEP Community Workshops

Junior Blind’s statewide STEP Community Workshops are designed to help teens and young adults identify areas of career interest and successfully transition to independent living, college or the workforce. Through community-based workshops and summer programs, highly-experienced staff work with employers, professionals, mentors and educators to provide students with hands-on experience, preparation and support to achieve individualized goals.

Who We Serve

STEP Community Workshops primarily serve teens and young adults who are blind or visually impaired, ages 16-24.

Program Features

Students develop work-readiness skills through group seminars and workshops in their area, featuring:

  • Leadership development
  • Career, college and financial aid exploration and presentations
  • College campus tours including meetings with access counselors
  • Informational interviews with successful professionals who are blind or visually impaired
  • Real-world work experience through internship opportunities and/or job shadowing
  • Assistive technology training to help students become proficient at navigating the Internet, using email and completing assignments
  • Braille-Low Vision Literacy support
  • Route planning and safe travel
  • Independent living skills development to support students’ self-care needs
  • Support to develop self-advocacy skills
  • Social skills development

*Workshops are designed based on local resources.

Referral Procedure

Participation in DOR sponsored Junior Blind workshops are at the discretion of, and require approval from, Rehabilitation Counseling staff prior to attendance.
